Bots Now Outnumber Humans Online — and It’s Fueling the Ban Arms Race

For the first time, machines generate more web traffic than people. Imperva’s latest Bad Bot Report found that automated traffic made up more than half of all web traffic in 2025, tipping past human activity — and the knock-on effect is reshaping every platform’s approach to identity and, by extension, every account operator’s life.

Why this matters. When most traffic is automated, platforms can no longer afford to trust anything by default. That’s the root cause behind the aggressive 2026 crackdowns across Meta, Google, TikTok, Amazon, and others: they’ve moved to AI-level behavioral analysis and instant cross-account linking, scoring the environment behind every login rather than waiting for a violation. The uncomfortable side effect, as many legitimate operators have discovered, is that the same nets sweeping up fraud and spam also catch ordinary multi-account users — agencies, sellers, and media buyers who simply run more than one account.

What’s driving detection. Two forces compound. Bots have gotten better at looking human — security firm GreyNoise tracked billions of malicious sessions statistically indistinguishable from real users — so platforms respond by scrutinizing device fingerprints, IP reputation, and behavior far more tightly. And the residential-proxy botnets feeding a lot of that bad traffic (see our coverage of the NetNut takedown) have pushed platforms to treat commercial proxy pools and datacenter IPs as inherently suspicious.

What it means for you. The bar for looking like “a real person on a real device” keeps rising. Surviving it means the full stack done properly: a quality antidetect browser, clean residential or mobile proxies, and human-plausible behavior — not cheap infrastructure and automation that trips velocity checks.
